The European Commission renews the approval of glyphosate

In a statement released on 16th November 2023 by the European Commission, the renewal of glyphosate was confirmed for a period of 10 years. Although a majority was not reached by Member States, glyphosate will be renewed, subject to additional restrictions including a prohibition of pre-harvest use as a desiccant and certain measures to protect non-target organisms.

Glyphosate has become one of the most controversial active substances globally, and the decision to renew the approval will no doubt cause a stir. However, after 4 years of assessment and over a thousand studies later, no areas of critical concern were identified.

The decision will be welcomed by the industry; but this is only the first stage of the process. Now glyphosate has been renewed at an EU level, all products containing glyphosate will need to be considered for renewal in each Member State. This means that Member States are able to restrict or remove their use at a national level if they consider it necessary.

If you have any products containing glyphosate, you will need to submit your dossiers within 3 months from the date of application of the renewal regulation.
