REACH is a European Union regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation & restriction of Chemicals

Scope

REACH applies to substances manufactured or imported into the EU in quantities of 1 tonne or more per year. it applies to all individual chemical substances on their own, in preparations or in articales  (if the substance is intended to be released during normal and reasonably foreseeable conditions of use from an article).However there are specific substances which have total or partial exemptions under the REACH (exemptions)

Roles

Depending on your type of activity and position on the supply chain for a signed chemical you will be assigned for a specific role for this chemical with identified REACH obligations.

The identified REACH roles are:

  • EU Manufacturers and Importers- The vast majority of obligations under REACH apply to manufacturers and importers of substances in the EU  
  • Downstream users may be formulators of preparations (e.g. paints, glues, detergents, plastics or rubbers), users of chemicals (e.g. oils, lubricants, antifoams) in industrial processes, professional users (e.g. car repair shops and cleaners) or producers of articles (e.g. electronic components, computers, toys or cars).
  • Distributers and suppliers
