pesticides and the environment
outsourcing solutions for the crop protection industry

The fate and effects of chemicals in the environment are highly linked. Our approach to risk assessment combines a deep understanding of both toxicology and environmental fate. This holistic approach is especially important for decision making when refining higher tier risk assessments or deciding whether to generate additional toxicity data.

We perform the risk assessments that are required for all dossier submissions under 91/414/EEC. These assessments cover aquatic and terrestrial organisms, vertebrates, invertebrates and plants. Enviresearch offers an international service covering all member states including:

  • review of the member states of interest and intended uses of the product
  • development of a risk assessment strategy
  • interpretation of ecotoxicology study reports for use in risk assessment
  • conducting relevant modelling to cover all compartments
  • standard FOCUS modelling techniques for all European scenarios
  • modelling using methods and models specific to individual member states across Europe
  • prediction of parent and metabolite concentrations
  • non agricultural pesticide fate modelling e.g. HardSPEC or USES/EUSES
  • linking toxicology data to fate data in the form of risk ratios
  • production of the fate and ecotoxicology sections of the dossier

At some stage risk assessments may not pass the requisite trigger values. In such cases, a refinement strategy must be developed, Enviresearch will work with you to look at options such as:

  • higher tier pesticide fate modelling e.g. probabilistic or landscape-level assessments
  • additional ecotoxicology data
  • higher tier environmental fate experiments
  • reasoned argument about the relevance of the risk assessment
