Environment:

The assessment of the fate and behaviour in the environment of biocidal active substances and biocidal products is a critical part of the evaluation process under the BPD.

A robust database of studies is required to provide data on the fate and behaviour of the biocidal active substance and the biocidal product in the environment. Predicted Environmental Concentrations (PEC) of active substances in each environmental compartment are calculated to provide the basic exposure values used in the environmental risk assessment. PEC values can also be compared with important triggers for further higher tier testing. EUSES modelling and specific Emission Scenario Documents (ESD’s) form the main tools used to calculate PEC in soil, groundwater, surface water and air.

We have extensive expertise from our work on pesticides to determine the appropriate and refined input values for the models and produce higher tier assessments and present detailed modelling to regulatory authorities.

The environmental risk assessment for biocidal active substances and biocidal products also requires a robust ecotoxicology database to provide an assessment of the effects on indicator species. We have a wide range of experience and expertise in all areas of ecotoxicology.
